Day Twelve – Book Clubs are Awesome!

I have made no secret of the fact I love to read. There is no genre that is my favorite, I read whatever strikes my fancy. I find I’ll go through phases. One of my favorite books in recent memory was Water for Elephants and when I found out that one of my favorite actors (Robert Pattinson, y’all!) was starring in the movie I was really excited to see it. Kind of on a whim I decided to watch it with a group of girlfriends and we had the best time! Afterwards we were talking about other books and movies we liked and someone randomly suggested that we start a book club and we did! It’s very low-key. We have trouble coming up with dates that work and sometimes we go six or eight weeks between meetings but we’ve had a lot of fun with it.

At first we tried agreeing on books to read but that just became too complicated. Now we each take a turn choosing a book and we’ve had quite a variety! From oldies like Agatha’s Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd to more recent bestsellers like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl we’ve read very different books in the past two and half years. I think we all enjoy it. It’s made me read books I wouldn’t normally choose and I really like that. I love having a group to discuss the books with although our conversations veer off track very frequently!

And having a book club has broadened my group of friends. Some of these women I wouldn’t have had a chance to get to know if it wasn’t for our book club so I’m really grateful for that. We’ve become good friends and most (if not all!) of us have pretty strong personalities and it gets rather loud when we’re all together but that’s okay:)

We’ve taken a couple of group shots of us together at different events that I’ll share here. I don’t think we’ve ever actually taken a group picture of us at a book club meeting though. We’ll have to get on that!

These first two were taken in May 2012 at Erin’s wedding, in the photo booth. (Thanks for these pics Tabitha, I stole them from your facebook page!)

And this next one was taken when we got together for supper in February of this year to support Carol, April, and Holly who had lost their husband and father the month before. Amanda was just before giving birth to her baby boy that weighed around 12 lbs! So many memories with these women…so glad they’re in my life! And so glad that one of us (I can’t remember who now) had the random thought to start the book club because it has definitely enriched my life!

April, I seriously loved your summaries though! I get that it was a challenge but they were so fun to read!

I really love book club too!

Yes! I dearly love book club. It may be the only book club I’ve ever heard of where reading the book is totally optional. Most people read most of the books, so there is always plenty to discuss. I used to try to take notes for people who missed the meeting. I thought it would be nice to have that record of each of the books we read. It was a major challenge, though, because the conversation veered off topic about 57 times per hour. So I let go of that idea!

Speaking of which, we really need to get on the schedule for November! I think October may be a lost cause, unless we turn a birthday party into a book club somewhere!
